Today is the start of Plastic Free July – a campaign (started in Australia) to encourage people to cut or reduce their use of single use disposable plastic throughout the month of July. Yesterday I signed up (you don’t have to sign up, you can just give it a go if you like) to try and do this for one month. You can try it for a day, a week or however long you like, but the main thing is that it gets people thinking. If it all sounds a bit overwhelming, they also suggest that you cut down on the top 4 disposable plastic items instead.
– plastic bags
– plastic bottles
– plastic coffee cup lids
– plastic straws
Simple! Right? Well, it’s so easy to slip up (I’m forever forgetting to ask for “no straw” when ordering a drink) so it’s not about being perfect, just doing the best you can. Focussing on the positive, not the negatives.
Being a zero waste enthusiast already, I’m attempting to refuse all single use disposable plastic for the month of July. I still find my self buying a snack or bag of pasta in plastic now and then.
If you’re feeling up to it, even for just one day, then give it a go! I’ll keep you posted with how I get on and in the meantime you can read more about Plastic Free July here and follow them on social: @plasticfreejuly
